The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

How to transfer data appropriately to setup new RAID drives

Asked by ssittig in Hard Drives & Storage

Tags: raid, new, transfer

I have a Windows 2000 (SBS2000 actually) server that I want to create a RAID setup with. We have been operating with tape backup only for a while but would like to have a higher level of protection.

I have two hard drives installed that are used now, one Fujitsu 18.2GB and one Fujitsu 36.7GB. I recently installed a HP NetRaid 4M RAID controller and hooked up two new Fujitsu 18.2GB (exactly the same as the original installation) and two new Fujitsu 36.7GB (also exactly the same as the original installation). I created two mirrored hard drive containers with the 4M. So I have a total of six drives, installed, two original drives and four new drives that represent mirrored versions of the originally installed drives.

My plan is to copy the current drives exactly to the new containers, remove the old drives and hope to have the system working off the new RAID setup. After I'm satisfied that the setup works, I'd like to reintroduce the drives as dedicated hot spares for each container matching the size of the drives.

I'm not sure how to copy/move/mirror the data over exactly from the original hard drives to the new containers. I'd like to avoid having to use the tape backup route, is there any easy way to perform this operation? Do I need a specialized piece of software or can I use some Windows utility for this?

Thank you!
