The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. Advice needed for NAS storage for school

We have a existing Dell PowerEdge 2500 with SCSI RAID, and thinking of migrating from a "sharing D: for individual computers" to a central storage repository under Windows 2000 AD.

The installation is planned in a few months just before the Fall semester, and I was looking at the prices on Dell's website, and Oh boy, aren't they dirt cheap ? :-

Can we extend the existing server with external storage or we have to buy a newfangled server? Some people may need huge storage upwards of 10's of Gigs but most will be okay under 100Mb. I am tentatively looking at a minimum of 2 Tb storage with some sort of Tape backup. ( 4Gb tapes just won't cut it, some rare files we use are well over 20Gb ). It has to be quickly expandable inside a day/week so that if more users are integrated the system can then handle their storage needs. Storage has to be expandable to 10+ Tb (I am not sure what the upper limit will be, I am just making this # up)

I am hoping for a release of Samba 3.0 so that we can use it as a member server for the sub-domain, so my inclination is for a new Linux based setup, but if we can extend the existing server so much the better!
