Question

My hard drive has been "dropped"

Asked by: Haaland

I have two Western Digital Raptor 36,7 GB hard drives, connected to the built-in S-ATA controller (Silicon Image Sil3112A) on my ASUS A7N8X Deluxe motherboard. They are set up in RAID 1, and worked fine for a couple of days. Then, suddenly, after I had stress-tested the computer one night, the status of one of the disks (the one connected to the primary connector), changed from "Current" to "Dropped". The computer still worked fine, but I got the impression that the "RAID 1"-setup was not working. Therefore, I chose to take a risk and delete the RAID set, to create it once more. I did that, and was happy everything worked, I did not even have to reinstall the operating system.

After this, I thougt that the disk maybe had failed, so I tested it with Western Digital's Data Lifeguard Tools, which I downloaded from their web site. I ran the extended test, but the program did not find any errors. From that, I concluded that it was probably only a one-time-error.

But, after another couple of days, the same thing happened all over again. I stress-tested the hard drive once again, and got the same failure. I thought I could just delete the RAID set, and re-create it, but this time, it did not work. It seems that I have to re-install the operating system, and that is going to take a while...

After these experiences, I have some questions:
What does it mean that a hard drive has been "dropped"?
Why does it happen?
How can I avoid that it happens again?
Is it possible to get everything working again after it has happened, without installing the operating system again?
