The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

NTFS Records Lost?

Asked by Nicholas_Jakobsen in Hard Drives & Storage

My name is Nicholas. I have 2 HDs. The primary, a Quantum 60GB contains the boot records for what used to be a dual boot setup. I removed the OS on the Quantum drive and so what remained is the boot records on the Primary Drive and WinXP on the Slave (Western Digital 30GB). I'm running NTFS on both HDs, Converted with partition magic without incident. However, I ran a defrag on the Quantum drive which also completed successfully. I then restarted my computer for the first time (I BELIEVE)after the defrag and was promted that there was a problem with... this is the part I forget. I know it wasn't "NTLDR is missing". But it may have said there was a problem with the MBR. So, I reset the computer and same thing happened which was to be expected. Then I disabled the Quantum drive in the BIOS, reinstalled WinXP on the WD HD (because the WD HD didn't have the NTDLR) in a new directory so I could restore the old one if possible. I started windows and tried to view the Quantum drive but it showed no data at all. Then I believe I re-enabled the drive in the BIOS, and when windows started up again, it ran a checkdisk on the Quantum drive and "Repaired" all sorts of things. I didn't think to stop the checkdisk because it was being run on "drive d" which USED to be the WD, but was now the Quantum drive because of the reinstalling and bios swapping and such. SO, I think I may have pooped everything up because now I can see the contents of the drive and it's nearly empty, only a bit of stuff checkdisk dumped in there. Any recommendations, maybe a diagnosis?

Thanks for reading this far, I would give all my points away for this one but I guess I only start with 125.
Nicholas.
