  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. What's the largest HD my MB / BIOS can support?

Hi,

I just hit a brick wall with a new 60Gb HD and my Pentium III 500 Mhz system.

The BIOS won't detect it. I checked that with a known working 60Mb HD from my son.

Motherboard info: Intel 440 Chipset family
Memory controller: 82443 DX
I/O Controller: 82371EB (PIIX4E)

BIOS info: Award Modular BIOS V4.51PG
Category: IBM PC/AT
Date: 03/23/99

Is there any way I can update this through the firmware? Can the actual BIOS chip be upgraded?

Any other workarounds to get the 60Gb HD recognised?

Or failing all that what is the MAX drive I should go for?

The local vendors are useless.

This is the maximum system I can afford at this time so no "a motherboard upgrade is so cheap (in $US)" pleeeeeeeeaze :-).
