The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Recovering Files lost after Formatting HD

Asked by tmm1012 in Hard Drives & Storage

Ok, first of all let me do the honors....and *SMACK* myself upside the head repeatedly for being so stupid!!!  Feel free to repeat as needed after reading this question...

I have a laptop running Windows XP Professional on a FAT32 formatted HD.  Every once in a while, I like to clean out my system, format the HD, and start over from scratch (it's a slower computer, so it gets clogged up pretty quickly).  I've done it probably 10 times or so, but this past time, I did it a little too quickly and forgot to back up one of the most important files on my computer....my e-mail.  I use Microsoft Outlook XP, and I know that my PST file containing my Outlook account is stored in Documents and Settings\(My User)\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.  However, I completely forgot to backup this file, and now I'm without my 150+ emails, 50+ contacts, schedule, tasks etc.  When I formatted the HD, I booted to a DOS prompt and used the basic DOS format command.  Then I restarted with Windows XP startup floppies and performed a new install.

So what are the odds of me being able to recover the PST file I lost?  Does anybody know if it's possible to recover files after a HD has been formatted, and of any software that might work?  I'd greatly appreciate any help!

-Tommy
