The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Windows XP doesnt recognize 2nd Hard Drive

Asked by jradams76 in Hard Drives & Storage

Background: I have a P4 machine running windows XP on the C: and using the D: for games and other programs. Both are NTFS and C: is basic while the D: is dynamic (dont ask me why my friend set me up this way)

Last weekend we had a bad thunderstorm and my pc was off when I woke up the next morning and turned it on the D: was no longer there. I have used some of the DIY tools like iRecover to get some of my files off the D:  The D: is a 120 gig Maxtor and the C: is 30 or 40 gig so I really dont have enough room to recover all my files and was wanting to know can the D: be fixed?

Under disk managment XP sees the drive but its not active and when I activate it. It gives me an error. I have then used XP's recovery console to view the drives and when I type Map it shows all the drives and the D: is there but its drive letter is a "?" not D.   I have also used fixmbr and no luck with that either.  After using the diskpart tool and viewing the partition it says

partition 1
type 42
hidden yes
active no

There is no volume associated with this partition.

Viewing the disk information says:

Maxtor 6y120L0
Disk ID: 2eab6664
Type: IDE
Bus: 0
Target: 1
LUNID: 0
There are no volumes.

Event viewer gives me these message:

Disk group JeremyDg0: Errors in some configuration copies:
Disk Harddisk1, copy 1: Block 0: Invalid magic number in the configuration copy

INTERNAL Error - The disk group contains no valid configuration copies  (C10000B6).

I tried to create a volume but it says not enough space to create a volume.  Is there anyway I can get my disk working again without fdisk and reformatting?

TIA
