Linux hard drive recovery

My hard drive in my main home server (linux based) has gone bad.  I have a warranty replacement here, with the advanced option I have both for about 2 weeks now.  I'm trying to recover the data off the old drive and not doing terribly well.  I have both drives installed, and I have been 'dd'ing the data over.  First try, as I expected, the drive gave out in the middle.  When that happens, it locks the whole computer right up.  Then I tried manually doing chunks of about 15 ish gigs at a time, and with pauses in between it seemed to all go right, but then an fsck showed countless bad files and directories.
Then I tried scripting it to copy 10 gigs, wait 10 minutes, and do the next 10.  That also died in the middle.

So I am having a tough time.  I have an old faulty drive, which I can read, but it will periodically crash the whole computer.  I've got another, identical, replacement drive in the machine.  I am wondering what's the most reliable way to copy over all the data?

They are both maxtor SATA drives, if it makes a difference.  250GB, about half used.Start Free Trial
