The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. Building High Availability SAN for Media Editing

I have been looking at a couple solutions for our company's storage needs, or looking to build out own SAN RAID.

Our primary use will be for audio and video editing:
- require 100 MB/s throughput for SD editing, being able to expand to 400 MB/s for HD editing
- require 6 TB of storage (and a means to protect it RAID 3,5, or 6 )
- require 4 seats (Apple G5 & G4) directly connected with 5 PC clients connecting through a Gateway (our Small Biz Server 2003)
- simple access to volume for clients
- simple means of managing and configuring volumes and administrating users

Two of the turnkey products that we have been looking at our:
Apple's XServe RAID/XSAN 5.6 TB RAID 5: http://www.apple.com/xsan/ (44K)
Facilis Storage TerraBlock 9.6 TB RAID 0,1: http://facilis.net/Products.htm (35K)

If we were to build our own solution I would use the following hardware:
AIC RMC5E Chassis: http://www.aicipc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=wwwroot.product&ID=133&loc=sto
24 x Seagate 400 GB SATA - (storage)
2 x WD 36GB - (system)
SuperMicro MB with either single or dual CPU and 2 GB Ram
Either:
2 x 3Ware 9500S-12 (RAID Controller): http://3ware.com/products/serial_ata9000.asp
2 x Areca ARC-1130 (RAID Controller): http://areca.us/PCIXE.htm
Either:
Dual GigaE Controller
Atto Celerity FC-42XS on the SAN box and each client uses Celerity FC-41XS

A few basic questions that I have before considering the build:
- What O/S would be used?
- All the solutions I have seen speak of a meta-data controller. What is it and is there a solution to this is we were to build our own solution?
- Would our solution be able to start on GigE and upgrade to FC when required?
- Are the bandwidth speeds I spec'd realistic and will the system be as stable/reliable as either of the turnkey solutions?

I hope to tackle these initial questions and then move deeper into the challenge if the project is feasible.
