With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. Getting "Disk Error-Press key to restart" and/or  "Insert System disk or other Media" messages

I turned the PC on this morning, checked a few e-mails, and then shut it down. It wouldn't shut down properly, and gave me BSOD.

On restart, it gave me an "invalid system disk" message. Using FDISK, it told me that the partition was not set active, so I set it active, but no different. I then used FDISK/MBR, also no different. I'm not sure why the partition was not active (more on that later). Up until now, the PC has been trouble free (no crashes, lockups or error messages for over 2 years)

My configuration:
P-4 2.4
512 ram (although the system config screen says 524 mb, never noticed that before)
Seagate U320 SCSI HDD
LSI Logic U320 SCSI controller
Maxtor IDE HDD on motherboard U133 controller (not the primary or secondary channel)
Both drives are "seen" during boot up
Dual booting XP (SCSI) and Win 98 (IDE), but I'm not getting the bootloader menu (clue????)

I'm pretty sure BOOT.INI is on the IDE drive, which now that I think about it, is probably the source of the difficulties, as I can see the data on the SCSI drive, but not the IDE drive.

I'm now wondering if maybe the partion on the XP drive wasn't SUPPOSED to be active, as the bootloader was on the IDE drive???? (Been so long since I put this together, that I can't remember). Hopefully using FDISK for setting it active, and /MBR didn't hurt my chances of recovering from this problem.

So, I don't know for sure what the problem is (that's why I'm asking the experts), so anyone who has an idea-I'd very much appreciate hearing from you. But if my theory is correct, then how do I get the XP drive to boot? (I don't care about the IDE drive-for now)

Lastly, wasn't sure whether to put this question in the "Storage" or "OS" section, as it concerns both, so hopefully the right people will see this.
