The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Unable to restore from HP Data Protector / Omni Back

Asked by gregco in Hard Drives & Storage

Tags: data, protector, error, restore

We have a problem with HP Omniback / Data Protector.  We are able to reliably backup 700 GB  ( confirming seven hundred gigabytes )  of data on a regular basis.

We are able to restore selected individual files from this backup without any problems.

When we attempt to restore all of the data from a full backup,  the process will fail at some point anywhere from say 90 GB of the way through to 400 GB of the way through.  The error message upon failure of the restore process is:

[Major] From: RSM@hostname ""  Time: 23/05/2005 10:03:57 a.m.
[61:3003]        Lost connection to Filesystem restore DA named ""
      on host hostname.
Ipc subsystem reports: "IPC Read Error
System error: [10054] Connection reset by peer
"

( "hostname" has been substituted for the real server name in the above error message )

We have tried breaking the 700 GB of data into smaller restore sessions,  however the problem persists.

We have recently been upgraded,  by HP,  from Data Protector V5.0 to Data Protector 5.5.  Note that the names "Data Protector",  "OmniBack"  and "OpenView Storage Data Protector"  all reference the same backup software in case it is known by other names elsewhere.

Our environment can be summarised as follows:

Windows 2000 server with SP4 applied
HP Server Hardware
HP Omniback version 5.5 with patches DPWIN_00111,  DPWIN_00112 and DPWIN_00113 applied
HP SDLT1 tape drive direct-attached via SCSI to server hardware
HP MSL5026 tape library
1 Gbps switched network

We have been working closely with HP on this problem for a couple of months now,  and so far they have not been able to determine a cause for this issue.

HP have suggested that we have a DNS / name resolution issue,  however we and they have checked this and have not been able to find any problem with DNS.

HP have suggested a networking / IPC problem,  however again no specific issue has been found.

The issue has been escalated within HP to their internal development labs.

My question is,  has anyone seen this issue,  and if so,  can they advise a course of action to fix it ?
