The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Switched HDD temporarily - Cannot see original D: anymore

Asked by smozgur in Hard Drives & Storage

Hi experts,

I got following PC structure:

IDE1 :
HDD1 -> Master - System (C: E:)
HDD2 -> Slave (F: G:)

IDE2:
HDD3 -> Master (D:)
DVD -> Slave (H:)

HDDs are NTFS and OS Windows XP. It was working without problems since I built it.

Today I had to get some information from one of my old HDDs (Fat32). I unplugged DVD cable and plugged old HDD instead (slave). Restarted my system and got all data succesfully from the old HDD that I needed. However old HDD appeared as D: and I didn't see my original D: (HDD3) when I did this. I thought that it wouldn't be a big trouble and removed old HDD then restarted PC when I am done with data transferring.

Now I can't see my HDD3 but old HDD in D: with old HDD's label, size and files the one which is not installed anymore (it is on my desk at the moment.)! This never happened before. When I get into D drive (which is problem drive in question) I see the files that I got in old HDD (which is not plugged anymore). Of course I can't open any file in this drive since it is not actually that drive but just like an image.

What have I done wrong and how can I fix it? Did I somehow messed with drive letters so Windows XP doesn't want to see the original D: anymore but remember the temporarily plugged old HDD?

Thank you!
Suat
(I deleted my old question which is related the same issue because I realized that I didn't explain what I did correctly.)
