8mm tape question

Not really sure if this is the correct place to ask this question or not, but if someone has information / links to my question, it would be great.  We have an old 8mm tape backup that has died.  We are not concerned with the data on the tapes, we are considering tossing them.  My question is - does anyone know if these tapes would work in a 8mm Camcorder, or are the formats different enough that they won't work.  I've got about 30-50 tapes, and if they can be used, then why toss them.
