The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Western Digital Raptor problem...

Asked by Ali_TR in Hard Drives & Storage

Tags: , ,

Hi,

I had 2 36.6GB SATA Western Digital Raptors running in a RAID 0 with Windows XP for around a year without any problems, a week or so back I woke up to find my PC wouldn't boot so I ended up clearing the partition and doing a fresh install of Windows XP. Once I had gotten back in to Windows I noticed that the Drives were being accessed significantly longer than they were before which was causing major pauses in audio/visual applications at random but particually when accessing new data. Before this wasn't an issue and even new data sections loaded without massive HD Access issues.

Thinking it was HD failure I replaced both drives in the RAID with identical drives and did a fresh install. To my surprise I have exactly the same problem. I have had tests ran on my other hardware which reveal no problems but those who have tested my system have reported the problems with the excessive HD access with intense loading.

My system is as follows:

Windows XP Service Pack 2
Abit AV8
Athlon 64 FX 53
2GB Corsair 3200 XL Ram
X800 XT Platinum Edition
Audigy 2 ZS

Do you have any suggestions on what could have been disabled within Windows XP to cause this issue? Is it possible the drives are no longer accessing the memory directly but instead going through the Processor? Please could you suggest some things I can check in Windows with regards to DMA/UDMA or other possible fixes?

Thankyou
