The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Folder Gone on USB Hard Drive in Windows XP

Asked by rebies in Hard Drives & Storage

I have a USB hard drive I use for most of my personal files.  It is set up as drive "F:\" in Windows XP.   Most everything is accessible and working on this drive, but one folder is giving me problems.  This folder is named "F:\OtherStuff\MyDocs\".  For some reason when I browse to this directory I get the error: "F:\OtherStuff on 192.168.1.99\MyDocs is not accessible.  The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."  Same goes for a command prompt.  I "cd" into the folder, but a "dir" is returning "File Not Found".

The other thing I just noticed is that this folder used to be called just "OtherStuff".  A while back I changed my IP address in my local network to 192.168.1.99 - and that might somehow explain that folder's name being changed and now being “OtherStuff on 192.168.1.99”.  Strange in any case because I would not have done this intentionally.   So my first thought is maybe this folder is pointing to the wrong place on the disk or the name is accidentally wrong.  However, right now I can access "F:\OtherStuff on 192.168.1.99\" and its contents and other sub-directories just fine.  So the problem is somehow with just the "F:\OtherStuff on 192.168.1.99\MyDocs\" directory specifically.

Any ideas on what to do?  I'm quite sure this entire disk did not fail as I can access most of the data and folders on it.  It seems I'm just having problems with this one folder.

I would run chkdsk or scandisk or disk defragmenter, but since these files are important to me - I'm definitely going to get advice before doing anything first!
