The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

WinXP won't burn from neither PC

I have XP Pro and have CloneCD installed but I have told it not to run upon boot (using StartUp CPL) and use Windows own 'Windows Explorer' (with their own Roxio washed down version) to burn discs.
However, when I attempt to burn any discs (.gif, .psd, .jpeg etc.) the following happens:
1. I copy/paste files (or I've tried right-click and send to) and paste them into drive "f" (a sony external usb2 dvd +/-RW drive) or drive
2. I pull-down on 'file' to 'write to cd' and start burn
3. I name file (having used several different types of name thinking it was problem - it wasn't)
4. I tell windows to start burn and it does
5. It tells me I have 35 seconds to completion and I see process start
6. The window showing the process changes to a yellow exclamation point and tells me the following:
"CD Writing Wizard: There was an error in the writing process. The disc you have atempted to write may no longer be usable. What do you want to do? Eject and try making another CD / Delete the files that are waiting to be written / Save the files so that I can try again later"
I get this error if I use either PC and if I use local "C:\>" files or 'my documents' files. Also, I get this if I am using either burner mentioned herein.
As to my hardware; I have the following: I use two Dell desktops, sharing one external Maxtor 80GB HD; used as the 'My Documents' file for both drives.
I have tried burning from the C: drive and from the 'My Document's folder - same error.
My 'old' dell (Dell Dimension 4100 PIII, 996MHz, 384 RAM, XP Pro) uses a TDK CD/RW 4800B. This was an after market install that has been working for 2 years w/out issue.
My 'new' dell (Dell Dimension 8400 PIV, 3GHz, 512 RAM, XP Pro) uses the factory installed 'Elby DVD-ROM SCSI CdRom Device & Samsung DVD-ROM SC-616E' (I have no idea what this is, could it be something CloneCD creates). This PC also has an external Sony DVD/+-/RW/USB2 device.
I get the error I've described above whether I'm using either PCs burner and I also get it whether I am using either Burner (Sony on 'new' or TDK on 'old').
Finally, I have CLONECD installed on both PCs. I use 'startup cpl' (freeware) to tell it not to load on boot and I have no either burning software loaded on either PC.
