Problem with SATA hard drive and installing Windows XP

I am some what familiar with installing Windows on to a SATA hard drive, but I am running into a huge problem.  I know that you need specific drivers on a floppy, and have those ready.  When I am prompted to hit F6 to load my drivers,  it is unresponsive.  I hit F6 7 or 8 times before the message goes away.  Have any of you ever heard of this problem or ever come accross it yourself?  Any suggestions?
