I am dealing with a 80GB Western Digital SATA150 hard drive and a ASUS A8N-SLI motherboard.
On all cold startups (startups when the computer has been off for an extended amount of time) I get the error message "BOOT DISK FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" - This problem only started a week after I initially built the system and installed Windows. So at one point it ran without a hitch.
Typically I could try to reboot about 15 times or so and it would eventually go into Windows. From that point I could restart the computer without a problem. I could power down the machine and turn it back on as long as it was within a short time period.
I had the system running non-stop for the past 30 days or so but last night the power went out so this morning I tried turning the computer back on and ran into the "BOOT DISK FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" message again when booting but this time no luck after multiple rebootings.
I have replaced the power supply, upgrading from a Antec Smart Power 450V to a Antec TruePowerII 550V. This had no affect.
I installed Windows on a 20GB IDE Western Digital hard drive and the computer has no problems booting with that hard drive--- hot or cold.
Also, the Windows running on the IDE drive recognizes AND can access files on the problematic SATA hard drive that will not boot into Windows. This means the drive still somewhat functions but cannot boot into Windows...
On another note, this is most likely unrelated and separate problem but in the unlikely chance it's not.... A DVD Burner in the system that worked without any problems on a separate system gives a blue screen error "Dumping Physical Memory" and restarts when information is trying to be read from the drive. This blue screen occurs on both installations of Windows- the SATA install and the IDE install. Which leads me to believe this a defect with the burner that has just surfaced and not a problem with the system itself.
This all leads me to my question.... Is this a problem with the motherboard, or the hard drive?
Thanks for your time, it is much appreciated!
