The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. Problems Formating External Drive

Hello,

Just put together a new external drive, here is the set up:

WD SATA II 250GB Caviar SE16 Internal Hard Drive

Nexstar 3 eSATA Enclosure (model#: NST-360SU-BK)

The enclosure is connected via an eSATA cable to a eSATA ExpressCard/54 (http://siig.com/product.asp?query=esata&pid=1036)

The low down:

I have been able to install all the drivers rather nicely and the unallocated drive shows up in windows disk management just fine. This leads me to believe my problem does not have to do with the esata express card or the enclosure. The problem is that no matter what I do it will not let me format this drive. I can partition it to what ever size I want but when I attempt to format in ntfs (any size partition) it begins and after some time it usually crashes my computer. I have also tried Partition Magic 8 which I own. I have tried formatting it with ntfs and Fat32 still to no avail. The error in partition magic i get is something to the nature of "error #11117".

In each event my goal has been to partition it as a primary drive but i have tried a logical as well, neither work.

Not sure if it could have anything to do with this but I have a notebook with an internal 80GB drive that I have already split into two partitions (both primary because they are two different OS').

I need urgent help with this, if it turns out that it is in fact the drive I need to return it soon. Thanks!Start Free Trial
