The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Backup Exec 10d: Cannot make remote server selection

Tags: backup, exec, remote, 10d, cannot
I recently had to rebuild one of my media servers and reinstall BE 10d because of a few problems I was having. Everything is up and running fine now except I cannot create a selection list for my back end exchange server (I was able to with all other servers about 30+). I have installed the remote agent via the push method which did not work so I uninstalled it and did the manual install by copying the RANT32 directory to that server and running it from there. Both methods made the remote agent appear in add/remove programs but this is the only server I cannot see when I go to create the selection list. I can ping from the media server to the exchange server and vice versa and can hit all drives/shares without being prompted for authentication. I am at a loss here. Anyone seen this before? I have not been able to find any documentation on the symantec site or forums regarding my issue.

Please Note: Media server has been rebooted several times as well as services being restarted. It's running 10d w/ SP2 and Hot fix 43. Exchange server has not and cannot be rebooted at this point in time.

Any additional information that you may need just ask.

Thanks in Advance.

Is there a firewall in the way? http://support.veritas.com/docs/194182 might help if so. Also you'll need port 10000 open.

That was one of the first things I thought of but the infrastructure hasn't changed since the rebuild. Also all web servers which ARE on the DMZ are not having issues. This server is only on the local LAN. I vaguely remember applying a patch and registry edit to stop the bengine from hanging/crashing during mailbox backups. So there were changes made on the Exchange server in the registry. I just can't find that damn article.

Can you see the exchange server in the backup servers "My Network Places"->"Entire Network"->"Microsoft Windows Network"->workgroup/domain

If not it may be a NetBT name resolution issue ( the "computer browser" service seems a bit dodgy on 2000+ machines ).
I had this problem and resolved it by installing a WINS server on my network, hence replacing the "computer browser" functionality

ok

So how have you configured the backup exec ?

do you have a enterprise domain account running "bkservice" with full adminrights

please check the following on the exchange controller:

in Active Directory local domain policy.
local rights following places that specific account must be enabled.

Access local folders
backup folders
log on as a service
restore folders

ok,

If it was my domain I would create such account as explained "bkservice" enterprise rights member of Backup operators and so on.

ok now to the Exchange server the "bkservice" account MUST have an email account so that it is showed in the global email directory and full access rights.

I almost garantie if you follow this instructions it will work.

please check on the remote server that the agent is running "services"

if you dont see it there do the install again by sharing the folder "RANT" but do the install by setupaa this does not require a reboot.

I cannot see that machine there. Though I can ping the machine by FQDN and NetBIOS name. I also confirmed there are DNS and WINS entries for this server. I will go down this path at the moment and see where it leads. I probably wouldn't have looked there right away. I'll resolve this and try it again.

Thanks.

Account running the backups is the same as before the rebuild and is a Domain Admin.

First thing I checks was that the Remote Agent was running.

Maybe someone's done a "net config server /hidden:yes" to stop users seeing it in the browse list. Adding it as a user defined selection gets around that.

The resolution was almost too easy. Ran an nbtstat -RR on the media server and waited a few minutes. The server just popped up and I was able to make the selection again. Thank you everyone for you help. Points awarded to CGretski for pointing me in the right direction.
