Issue with Veritas and backup job of exchange server

hi again,
     i was recently put in charge of my company's backups. i just have an issue when i back up my exchange server.
i have an external dlt drive with 200 gig of tape space. my issue is that my entire backup job for exchange is less then 173gigs. when the first tape hits around 130gig, Veritas asks me to insert another media. then ill go ahead and insert another tape to finish. the total amount is around 173 gigs total. the tape like i said is for 200gig, so why is it asking me thatit needs another tape.
im doing full backs every weekday, i dont know the difference between differential and full, i hate adding a nother tape to a job when the first tape should hold everything that backs up.
can someone please help.
