Why are VMware virtual disk files backing up so fast?

We have a file server with thousands of TIFF and JPG files which backup at about 600 MB/minute using a LTO 3 tape drive. The file server is a virtual server using VMWare. If we shutdown the server and backup the virtual disk files, the backup speed increases by 500%!!! Why is this? Is it due to how Backup Exec 10D (or any backup software) catalogs each individual file?
