The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Can not recover data from Laptop hard drive using a USB external drive enclosure

I have a Dell laptop that no longer powers on. I need to recover the data on the hard drive.
Troubleshooting led to a defective power module on the motherboard (basically the motherboard is bad).

The hard drive capacity is 30 GB. The drive shows only 300 MB of free space available when I do a "right-click > properties" which is what I recall when the laptop was working fine.

I removed the hard drive and inserted it into an external USB hard drive enclosure.
NOTE: I noticed when connecting the drive to the IDE pins to the drive enclosure connector, two rows of pins were not insertable into the connector. I have seen this before with other 2.5mm drives. I assume this is normal. I was able to see the drive as drive F on my PC

I can see the directory structure but I can not see actual user's profile directories including "My Documents" folder under "Documents and Settings" It says size 0. I know the data is there but has to be hidden. I tried sharing all the contents of the drive but it made no difference. I can see the "All Users" and "Default User" profiles.

How can I see the the primary user's profile and it's "My Documents" folder and it contents?
