Multicard USB readers not recognized by Windows XP

I have a Dell 8500 laptop with Windows XP Home Edition.  I have tried to install two different usb multicard readers unsuccessfully.  Each time, the readers show a light indicating they are powered.  Then I get Windows 98-like behavior asking where to find the drivers.  Each reader claims to be "plug & Play" in XP.  Any fixes?
