HDD TO EXT

Hi guys,    I'm using a 2007 Gateway notebook running Vista. Has a 160G HD. Which is all screwed up now. So I ordered another one from gateway. And I also bought a 320G external HD for storage. So basically in a nutshell what I want to do just transfer all info.  into the external. And install the new HDD in my notebook clean. I tried once by dr. and dr. Some took. Some came back with errors. Somebody help.
