The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

I am having problems connecting to a "maxtor shared storage II" network drive.

I am having problems connecting to a "maxtor shared storage II" network drive.
The strange thing is, out of 5 total computers, 3 work fine while 2 don't.

The maxtor drive is plugged into a dlink modem/router, and all the computers can access the web admin page. All the computers can also ping the IP address of the drive.

The problem though is 2 'new' computers cannot ping the drive using the hostname.

Accessing the drive using the IP address would be fine, however the Maxtor software seems to use the hostname only, which causes issues. Also, the network is currently set up as DHCP, so the IP address of the maxtor drive could change meaning shares that are automatically mounted may not work.

All computers have windows xp, same network settings, fully updated
All  computers have norton 360, same settings, updated

'New' computers (that have the issue) have Gigabyte GA-VM900M motherboards, with onboard LAN using the default Gigabyte drivers.

Tried disabling Norton
Tried flushing the temporary dns cache ipconfig /flushdns
Tried disabling the onboard network card on the 'new' computers and installing an old generic realtek card. Problem still occurs.

I could always manually assign IP addresses, then the maxtor drive IP wouldn't change so I could just mount the relevant shares using the IP address, but not being able to access the drive via a hostname on only 2 of 5 computers is a frustrating problem I'd like to solve.

Does anyone have any ideas?

It just seems extremely strange to me, no logical at all.
