The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Errors on \Device\Harddrive1

Asked by rkricketts in Hard Drives & Storage, Removable Backup Media, Computer Hard Drives

Tags: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1 during a paging operation.

I have a computer running SBS 2003 with two 500GB SATA drives in a RAID1 config.  I also have a 500GB external USB hard drive (well, several) that I backup to in rotation.

The two internal drives are configured as a RAID1 mirror at the controller level, presenting a single drive to the OS.  I've partitioned the drives thus:
C: = 50GB
D: = Remainder of drive, 450GB

I backup every night using NTBACKUP.  Last night, NTBACKUP puked, producing this:

-----Begin snipped from backup log-----
Backup started on 2008-01-09 at 23:29.

Error: The device reported an error on a request to write data to media.
Error reported: Invalid command.
There may be a hardware or media problem.
Please check the system event log for relevant failures.
The operation was ended.
Backup completed on 2008-01-10 at 04:17.
Directories: 26871
Files: 218358
Bytes: 128,669,641,591
Time:  4 hours,  47 minutes, and  57 seconds

Error: D: is not a valid drive, or you do not have access.
-----End snipped from backup log-----

The event log shows this:
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1 during a paging operation.

Couple of questions:
1.  How to decipher "\Device\Harddisk1"?  Are my two RAID1 drives "\Device\Harddisk0" and "\Device\Harddisk1" ?  Or is the external USB drive "\Device\Harddisk1"

NTBACKUP says drive D: isn't valid, yet I can access it fine.  At the same time, the USB status in the icon tray says there's an error with drive G:, impartial write (or something), save data to another drive.

So, is drive D: choking?  If so, which drive in the mirror is it?  Or is drive G: choking?

Any primer on decoding the "\Device\Harddisk[n]" nomenclature?  I've googled it but found no joy.

thanks...
