Can anyone explain to me what a Fibre Channel Storage Processor (SP) is?

Can anyone explain to me what a Fibre Channel Storage Processor (SP) is? I have been looking on-line for 2 days and I see it mentioned over and over, but no explanation of what it is. It's seems to be like a network adapter that the cable connects with to connect that storage system to the fabric, but then once in a while it sounds like it might be a CPU designed for storage systems and others I am just lost. Can some one please explain this in english so I can follow along?Start Free Trial
