The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Rearranging RAID 10 disks on a CERC 1.5/6ch

I recently needed to expand my capacity, and after some research, decided on going from 4 160 Gig disks in a RAID 10 configuration, to 2 700 Gig disks and 2 1000 Gig disks in RAID 10.  (The reason for the odd sizing was to avoid any issues that the controller has with reconfiguring 1.9 TB of data.  They say the bug is fixed, but I'm cautious.)

When I was preparing to upgrade, I noticed that the disks were arranged into two spans, with disk 0 and disk 2 in the first span, and disk 1 and 3 in the second span.  So, I arranged my disks the same way, with disk 0 as 700 G, disk 1 as 1000 G, disk 2 as 700 G, and disk 3 as 1000 G.

Replacing the disks went successfully, and I had 2 spans, the first was disks 0 and 2, at 700 G, and the second was 1 and 3, at 1000 G.

However, when reconfiguring the array to expand it, it rearranged the spans so it was now disks 2 and 3 in span 0, and 0 and 1 in span 1.  Now that a 700 G was paired with a 1000 G, in a mirror, I lost access to the 300 G on the larger disk.  (It's like having only 700 G disks in the array.)

How can I fix this situation?

I was thinking of removing disks 1 and 2, to break the array, and then adding them back in reverse order.  Would this work?
