Newbie to RAID drives need simple answers

I just ordered and received a Dell PowerEdge computer that includes a SAS6iR RAID Controller  (Raid 1).  System has 2- 250gig hard drives. The software is enabled, but How do I know for sure and test from time to time to see if the second drive is mirroring the first drive?   If first drive fails, how do I boot to the 2nd drive?  Only the primary drive is visible to the OS (Windows Server 2008).
