Code 19 error DVD and CD missing after bad installation W2000

I have W2000 pro (SP3), and two IDE devices, one DVD writer (D:) and one CD reader (E:).  Everything was fine until today, when I decided I wanted to make a CDRW disc.  I hadn't installed the bundled software that came with the drives up until then, so I installed it (InstantCD/DVD by VOB Computersystems).

The installation was a bit messy, with Windows Media Player Active Video (? - can't quite remember) being installed at the same time, and asking me if I wanted to reboot while the other installation was still going on in the background, which didn't impress me.

When I got it all installed, I found that my Windows D:/E: drives had vanished.

I ran the device troubleshooter, which reported Error code 19 (your registry may be corrupt).  I first tried uninstalling the software, which didn't fix the problem.  Then I tried all the suggestions from the troubleshooter, namely:

Reinstall plug-and-play devices
Reinstall drivers (it said they were already installed)
Check that SYSTEM has full access to Enum in the registry (I haven't a clue what this is for, but I followed the instructions carefully).

I also:

booted into Safe mode (still no drives)
Went into CMOS setup (it detected them without problems).

How do I get my drives back WITHOUT re-installing Windows (which loses me a week's work every time I do it because of the complexity of my machine)?

Any registry experts out there?  HELP ME - PLEASE!  I don't have a recent backup of my registry, unfortunately...

Did you try to boot into last known good configuration. You can do that by pressing F8 (or spacebar) during boot (with the black screen and white bar).

Will I risk losing any other stuff by doing that?  Is there any way of first finding exactly how old the last known good configuration is?
As jvuz says try last known good configuration, you will not lose anything by doing this.
If that doesnt work boot the machine into windows and look in device manager see if the devices are listed if they are uninstall them from device manager and restart your system.
This may reinstall the devices correctly.

It sounds as if you've got troubles with your IDE ATA / Atapi Controllers.

If you boot into safe mode, then go into the device manager, and remove the IDE ATA/Atapi controllers, and then reboot, this may bring back your missing drives.

Boot into safe mode,
click start,
click settings
click control panel
double click on system
select the "Hardware" tab
click on device manager button
expand the IDE ATA /ATAPI controllers group
select the top level controller
click on action,
choose uninstall
reboot the system and allow it to autodetect the devices again.

Hope this helps!

Last Known god will probably not help, since as soon as a full login is done, it updates itself. Since he is able to log in, the previous config is not there anymore.

You need to try a repair instal of WIN2k, which should not damage existing programs or data, although a backup of your data is always a good idea !.

 1) running SFC (System File Checker) with the /SCANNOW option (i.e., type SFC
/SCANNOW). You may be asked to provide the Windows 2000 CD-ROM.

If this also doesn't work, you can run an in-place upgrade from the Windows 2000 CD-ROM -- insert the CD-ROM, and select "Upgrade to   Windows 2000."

I hope this helps !
Hi mtorr,

You will not lose data performing a windows 2000 recovery. Follow this steps briefly and have your windows 2000 recovered.

1.) Boot your system with the windows 2000 cd, when prompted 3 options, press ENTER first.

2.) Next, press F8 to agree with terms and conditions.

3.) Press R to start recovering your system in this instance.

Thanks, everyone - but I'm still stuck I'm afraid.

I didn't bother with Last Known Good, as I think SysExpert is right about having logged in again already.

Bartender_1: Good tip, but it didn't work I'm afraid.  I uninstalled "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller", rebooted (in non-safe mode), and it detected the hardware and made me boot again.  After that, the drives were still missing :(

SysExpert: I ran SFC /SCANNOW.  It asked for the W2000 CD, which was a problem, because Windows cannot see my CD drives :)

Pc_Idiot: I got to step 3 of your instructions, but there was no 'R' option.  Instead, it showed a list of partitions and asked me to press ENTER to install W2000 onto one of them.  When I did this, it said that the active partition "contains another O/S and must be made inactive".  At this point I got scared and pressed RESET!!

Please note that I was on SP3 due to running Windows Update.  The CDROM is either the original W2000 or SP1, not sure which.
Have you tried this:

Do a search for a file on your system called cdrom.inf
Use the right mouse button to click on it,
select install.

repeat steps for file called dvd.inf

This should force a re-installation of the drivers necessary for cd-rom, and dvd-roms.

Hope this helps!

Snowguy, you just saved me a week's work.  That sorted it out!

Thanks very much to all who offered help.

P.S. I did try installing the .INF files, but no luck with that.
Your welcome glad you got it sorted.
Hey Snowguy, this was just the answer I was looking for - thanks.  You just saved me from having to reload a customer's OS for him.  Cheers!

Snowguy,
You're the man!  I bought Pinnacle Studio version 8 on sale and installed it in my Win2000 Pro PC.  Five days later, my drives are gone.  That tip did the trick.  Thanks!
