CD-RW “Incorrect Function” error

I’m getting this error “E:\ is not accessible-- Incorrect Function” on 2 different CD-DW drives on 2 different computers when using blank Disc

I can burn on both drives but cannot use drop/drag to a CD-RW disc.
I tried using Nero 5 with their inCd / Packet-Writing, tried Burnatonce and also NTI CD & DVD Maker Platinum.

I could only burn once to a CD-RW Disc after erasing it

W2K on both computers
Cendyne 481648AX
ATAPI CD-RW 52X24X

Thanks for any help that you can give me, Mike

never liked drag and drop , to many problems , use the old way by adding the files
to burning software . id also recommend disabling  all the applied drag and drop feature for every
application that you installed.

I never had a problem with the drag/drop till now, I really miss it and would like to get that working.

I did try a old Acer CD-RW disc which didn't work either but will try to get to the store tomorrow for some other CD-RW Disc

Thanks, Mike
Drag n' drop slows down explorer dramatically -- but if you like it, why not!

You really need to remove ALL burning and packet writing software completely from your system -- the reason is, one set of Cd/DVD drivers overwrites the others, and it no longer works.  So Blow it all away.  Reboot (maybe several times) -- now ONLY install the packet writing that COMES with the burning program you want to use.  If it is Nero, then install NERO packet writer along with Nero -- and BTW -- Nero 5 is more reliable that 6 -- stick with it!!!

After a reboot, test a packet drop before you do any more. If it works, leave it as is -- don't add other burning SW, as you will end up without packet SW again.  Also to maximize the efficiency of packet software, put the writer as MASTER on the secondary controller -- never run it as slave.
can you try roxio, drag n drop on roxio by using its drivers is good, uninstall first other burning software.
or try to format first the disc then you can use drag n drop as your wish of copying.
Too many CD writing software only complicate matters. As sciwriter and psychoriot suggested, remove them and restart.
Do ensure that your Windows 2K are updated with the latest service packs. (There are some which resolves performance issues with cd-writers).

As for the software, use only ONE that you like. (It's a matter of preference though...I like Nero 6.3 - Ultra Edition ...best!). Wrote many CD/DVD with this fine piece of software...;-)

I have the writers as master on both computers and only 1 burning software on the computer at a time with reboot between when I change software

Different CD-RW Disc didn't help.

Removing anti-virus softtware didn't help.

I'm getting the same error using 3 different burning software but will try to get Roxio also

Thanks, Mike
<< I'm getting the same error using 3 different burning software >>

Then I suspect you have a windows problem.  Have you installer service pack 4?
You might need to do a repair install or a reinstall to fix it.

First I would remove ALL the IDE drivers from device manager -- everything that you can -- and all drives listed for CD and HDDs -- even remove the floppy drive from device manager -- then reboot -- and see what it re-detects.

If this doesn't fix it, I'd reinstall W2K as a repair install from the CD, or try a clean install.  Something is wrong with your system files or IDE detect.  Have you checked the BIOS to see that the drives are being detected on start up?  Is the secondary channel enabled in the BIOS.

CHANGE DATA CABLE ON THE CD-ROMS -- it could be a bad data cable.  Not all 3 drives are going to be defective.

No help from removing drives from device manager.

both these drives are working except for using the rewrite function, drop/drag. I can burn.

How do I reinstall W2K as a repair install from the CD, would I lose any data

Thanks, Mike
Try these,
Upgrade to DirectX 9.0b End-User Runtime.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=141d5f9e-07c1-462a-baef-5eab5c851cf5&displaylang=en

Upgrade to Windows Media Player 9 series.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/player.aspx

These should improve performance update codecs and drivers.
As sciwriter suggested, it might be a windows issue.

Good Luck...;-)
No, yuo don't lose data in a repair install, only a clean install.
In windows XP, you simply insert the XP CD, and boot from it (BIOS setting).
You press enter as if you are going to install the OS over again.
Go past the F8 screen, until it finds your existing installation C:\windows -- or C:\WINNT with 2000.
At this point, you press "R" to repair.  Do not press enter, as it will overwrite the existing install.
As far as I remember, the process is essentially the same for 2000 -- have not used it in 4 years.

With 2000, you will have to reapply service pack 4 to get back to where you were, as the repair replaces OS files.
Another way is to simply issue the command from the command prompt, while 2000 is running --

sfc /scannow

SFC is the system file checker, and it also replaces corrupt system files, but does not fix the registry, like repair does.

But that would be the simplest to do, to see if a corrupt file is the problem.

Then AFTER that, apply the patches for Direct X and WMP that shahrial has suggested just above.
Nero is up to version 6, you can try to remove it and reinstall 5.5 or 6. I personaly have 5.5 and all is dandy.
I remember however that to use drag and drop on a cr-rw when I was using cd creator, I had to "format" the cd-rw so it can be used as a 700 megs (or so) drive. That was solid software in it's own way, it worked fine, but had to have the SW written so it could be read afterwards.

Upgrading to DirectX 9.0b End-User Runtime & Windows Media Player 9 series didn't help.

Then I got the post from sciwriter and tried sfc /scannow which didn't help.

How can I boot from the W2k CD.

I would just buy a new HP DVD420i burner if I knew that it would work and not have the same problem, these 2 burners may be too old for the sotfware????

Trying to get an older version of Roxio that I used before without any problems.

Thanks, Mike

I don't have Roxio on here yet

Mike
CD-RW'a stink, no offense, but for the price, I would just use regualr "R"'s.
Besides, the shelf life of cd-rw's are terrible, don't be surprised to find some of your old burns unreadable,
it's happened to me.
My suggestion, upgrade to XP if you can, and like someone else said here, having too many burning software can cause many
problems.
So use the built in burning feature of XP, it actually works very good.
Good Luck!
Oh hell, I didn't notice you were running RE-writables.  Senor Pablo is dead-on the point here -- CD RW disks are a disaster waiting to happen on a great number of CD writers, which can burn writables with NO problem.  I had to throw ALL of my 100 rewritable disks away, they seized every new CD burner I put them in -- even siezed the system when one was in the drive.

Thank you, Senor Pablo for catching this crucial issue.   Throw the RW away, and buy only silver write-once.  They are so cheap, they are worth it.  And if this works, make sure senor pablo gets some of the points, please.

As I posted before I never had a problem with the drag/drop till now, I really miss it and would like to get that working.

I only have/had 1 burning software installed at one time.

I want to keep the same OS on my 3 computer network and XP is out of the question, too expensive.

I now have Roxio 5.3.5 installed which worked for 1 time before locking up the drive or getting that error message “E:\ is not accessible-- Incorrect Function”

After 1 reboot and viewing the Disc I was able to view the data in both drives from the CD-RW AFTER I took the disc out??????

It seems that I can format the cd-rw then use it only once

Thanks, Mike

I'm giving the points to sciwriter for all the time and work that he put into this

I got the 1 PC with Roxio to work as long as I don't use any RW's that were formatted with InCd. I can't get the 2nd PC to work with any software so have ordered a HP DVD420i writer and thinking about getting Roxio 7 but will wait to see how Roxio 5.3.5 works with the new writer as I was told there wasn't that much difference between the 2 except for some bells & whistles

Thanks for your time/work, Mike
Mike -- HA!!  InCD was the problem, on a RW disk.  I didn't realize you were running InCD.  Packet writing software sounds like a wonderful idea, but CDs aren't hard disks, they are so much slower, and R/W disks can sieze a system anyway, so the combination of InCD with RW I think was the killer.  I tried packet software, and on every system I put it on, it made it go through convulsions -- the whole system would sieze.  So I never install it.  Just get used to doing an installation of the burning software where you install the burning basics, and that is IT -- no packet software.

Roxio 5x works fine, but I think to handle DVDs correctly you will have to go to at least version 6.  Version 7 is the best for DVDs and is one of the only ones out there that can cut a correct DVD-style movie.  Glad you fixed it.
