Cannot copy : Data error (cyclic redundancy check)
Hi everyone please please help me
Ive just copied all the information i could from my external hard drive to the c drive using a program called getdataback for ntfs which was recommeneded by this website.
The information i have is now on the C drive but i cannot copy it back to the external hard drive it says
cannot copy : data error (cyclic redundancy check)
noooooooo!!
Should i of done some more steps before copying music back to the external? chck dsk it and some other things? I literally formatted the F drive (external) and then immediatly started copying files over. Some are successful and are on the F drive but alot has stayed on the C drive?
please help

Hi Zenhouse please can you explain a little more when you say
1. Identfy your drives (your going to have to open the case) ? ?
Im using a Lacie big disk 500gb usb 2. Why would i have to open this up? Surely my inexperience would just damage the external!? Whats the testing software i need? It will be at www.lacie.com
What do you mean by If "one or both my drives are generic"
I can understand steps 2 and 3. But can i do those first before step 1?
Right now im moving all files from the F drive to the C. Then i will Chkdsk /f /r F: - -- i really hope this fixes it!
Thank you for the reply !!

Good luck ,
If your still getting the error run some drive test software on your C: drive I have only seen Cylic redundacy errors that were becuase the sending drive was bad, in this case your c: drive. Like I said you will have to open the case to see just what type and model hard drive you have in your PC as your C: drive. Its not to hard just make sure not to disconect anything and if you have to remove the ribbon cables to see just make sure you put thim pack as well as the power connectors.(P.S MAKE SURE THE POWER IS UNPLUGGED)
Get back to me if you still have problems
Also yes you should of run CHKDSK before you tried to retransfer your data. 500GIG's that might take some time over USB!

Did you install Windows XP service pack 2?
If not don't not yet.
If not don't not yet.
Hmmmmm Interesting
Run tests on your Caviar drive first it's A Westen Digital. go here and downlaod "Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows"
http://support.wdc.com/download/
Follow the directions run all the Diagnostic tools and seef you get any errors.
From reading the other thread it seems to me that your external drive might be to blame that is it or your interface mode or drivers (USB)
its hard to tell but I bet thier both under warranty so get the C: drive(Caviar) sorted out first. P.S run CHKDSK on C: first the run the Data lifegaurd program.

Ok one small step at a time :(
When i click on Error-checking for the external hard drive it says
"The disk check could not be performed because the disk utility needs exclusive access to some windows files on the disk. These files an be access only by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule this disk to occur the next time you restart the computer?"
I clicked yes and when the computer restarts it checks the c drive for ntfs and not the F drive!?
I click on disk defragment for the F drive and it says
"Disk defragment had detectd that Chkdsk is scheduled to run the volume (F:)
Please run chkdsk /f."
I have no clue becuase ive done all this..
This external hard drive has 47.5 GB data on it which seems to be at the same place it stopped accepting data last time...
What should i do?!

You might just want to send it back & Get another one.
Read this thread
https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20697163/Lacie-Big-Drive-XP-Formatting-Problem.html
Got to Lacie and fill out a Support request they will help you or send you another one.
http://www.lacie.com/support/
Did you get A dsik with the drive you might ant to look it over for any management tools.
Only C: will have A page file it's your system cache... Dont mess with it leave it on auto.
You can try to format the drive again make sure you use NTFS
Go to "My Computer" then right click on the drive (F: in this case) and select "Format" then chose the files system NTFS would be best.
If it is reporting it's self as 500gb just to a "Quick" format.
Several compaines have Partitioning software that might work better but most of it is not freeware.
Try and contact Lacie first.
Good Luck!

Like Zen said, try reformatting the F drive. Go to Start | Right Click on My Computer, choose Manage and then go to Disk Management. Right Click on the F: drive and choose Format.. Do not perform a quick format, just let it do its thing. When its finished you shouldn't have any troubles copying files over to it.
