Question

Internal drives in enclosures not working on laptop

Asked by: ThomasBallardIT

When I turn on my seagate external harddrive to my HP Pavilion dv8000t laptop it beeps every couple of second for a couple of minutes.  The computer is not picking up the drive, and I tried it with a different harddrive and enclosure and it didn't work either.  I tested the usb port and it works.  One seagate harddrive was an ide the other a sata.

Did you make sure that the IDE drive was designated as master when connected to the USB enclosure?  At times the drives either have  the CS or without designation.  Have you previously used this enclosure with this laptop successfully?  It could very well that there are drivers need for the laptop to talk to the enclosure via USB.  Check the device manager to see whether there are any devices that require attention (yellow exclamation).

try to put sata hard driver on master and ide harddrive on cable select :)

by: ThomasBallardITPosted on 2007-01-04 at 18:11:13ID: 18248761

There is a Human Interface Device that shows the yellow exclamation.  I have been able to use the harddrive before.  It says there was an error trying to get the driver off the internet.

by: nobusPosted on 2007-01-05 at 00:54:35ID: 18249936

do the enclosures have their own power source?
test them on another PC to be sure, they can go bad, without warning.
>>  The computer is not picking up the drive  <<  you mean there is no sound when you connect it, or loading ?
How is the drive connected, directly, or via an USB hub? If so, is the hib powered? if not, try a powered one, or a direct connection.
Was there any software, or upgrade installed before it happened? uninstalling it can help then

Try to install the latest Intel Inf Update.

Usually it works this problems out :)

Best Regards

by: ThomasBallardITPosted on 2007-01-05 at 06:34:18ID: 18251391

It began when I was on my computer the harddrive started beeping but it was still working, so I turned it off and when I turned it back on it hasn't worked since.  The Enclosure connects to the computer via a usb and it has its own power source.

Where do you get the Intel Inf Update?  I'm updated fully on windows update.

I also tried a different enclosure with a different harddrive who uses a usb and has a power supply, and it didn't pick up either.

delete the following key with regedit and reboot :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Enum USBSTOR
You will see a DWORD value START that says 3 there, change 3 to 4, to disable USB

ok - not what we need here .
try this then :
go to start-run-services.msc
go to plug and play
make sure that in the startup type it should be automatically
stop and start the service

by: ThomasBallardITPosted on 2007-01-07 at 10:32:48ID: 18262609

Won't let me stop the service.  But if I unplug any of the other usb things and plug them back in they work.

by: nobusPosted on 2007-01-07 at 10:42:15ID: 18262654

out of ideas then.

I would try to reinstall any drivers that have a Uellow !.

Lastly, Are you sure that the drive itself is working ?

If it died, then none of these things are going to help you.

I hope this helps !

by: ThomasBallardITPosted on 2007-01-08 at 06:33:16ID: 18266957

I tried to drives and I know for sure the other one was working.  Like I said there was one Human Interface Device that is showing up yellow, but I can't find a driver for it.  I stuck in the drivers disk and it said something about the driver and windows 98 and it couldn't install.

What OS is this ?

it is the ACPI which has a problem :  http://www.acpi.info/
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/263532
a repair install can be necessary :  http://www.short-media.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-3040.html
but if it is a hardware problem, you may need to swap the mobo.
