According to this page:

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/input/HID_HWID.mspx

The Human Interface Device (HID) class was originally developed by the USB Device Working Group. This protocol standard includes support for keyboards, mouse and pointing devices, joysticks, game pads, and other types of input devices. Although HID was originally developed for use over USB, the protocol is theoretically not dependent on any specific bus and can be ported over to other buses.

So, unless something is really messed up, your unknown HID device should not be an external hard drive.   I'll look for more info...

your class GUID is for a Microsoft Intellisoft Optical mouse:

Howdy ThomasBallardIT
I have had very similar messages in device manager when all the motherboard drivers were not loaded. If you have a disk that came with the mainboard, try loading the chipset drivers and any usb drivers. If these aren't loaded correctly that would explain the external drive not working as well.

Chances are your external hard drive is fighting for a drive letter with your HP printer that may have slots for SD, Compact Flash or other removable media types.  Try unplugging ALL devices that have removable media and see if you can correctly install your hard drive.

If that works, assign your hard drive a high letter, like R:\ for "removable" then reinstall the other devices.  You actually may be able to just plug them in and have windows re-detect them and all may work just fine.

To assign a drive letter to the drive:

right click my computer
choose manage
choose disk management
right click the external hard drive
choose change drive letter and paths.

If you do this and it works, you may have to reinstall any applications that are dependent on the paths that they were installed to.  All your data will be intact, just the links in the registry will be off.

Let me know.

Although I have several USB devices on my PC, the only one listed under that GUID is my APC Uninterruptible Power Supply. You might do a search in your registry for that ID to see if anything is identified. Alternatively, you could explore the 'Details' tab in the 'properties' dialog in Device Manager and then google the ID strings to identify the device.

Actually the class GUID has nothing to do with the actual device. The class GUID {745A17A0-74D3-11D0-B6FE-00A0C90F57DA} is for HIDClaa (Human Interface Devices). Anything under Human Interface Devices would be under this class.

The Device ID HPQ0006 is related to the install of Hewlett Packard's Quick Launch buttons driver which is used for programming the quick launch buttons on an HP keyboard.

@Kenneniah -- True enough, but the installed drivers will be listed under that GUID as 0000,0001, etc.

Just ouit of curiosity, do the Quick Launch buttons appear only on laptops or on desktops, as well?

"Just ouit of curiosity, do the Quick Launch buttons appear only on laptops or on desktops, as well?"

Unfortunately I'm not sure. Don't have any HP desktops, so I don't know if they put them on desktop keyboards or not. Hehe, don't have any HP laptops for that matter. I'm just going by Hewlett-Packard being listed in the text, and a google search for HPQ0006 brings up info on HP Quicklaunch buttons.

As far as the external hard drive not working...does it work in other computers?

Question needs to be asked. Is there a driver pack pertinent to operating this PC and have you tried to update the driver for the HID?

Well, I tried unplugging all the the other usb stuff and it wasn't working still.  I tried my drivers cd and that was a no go also.

by: Calmar46Posted on 2007-01-12 at 09:04:53ID: 18302987

If it were me, and I realize it isn't, at this point I would download the latest Quick Launch drivers from HP, uninstall the unknown HID device, and reboot. After PnP detection, direct the wizard to the .inf file in the download (you might have to extract all the associated files to a new folder), and see it it installs.

Have you tried the external hard drive on another machine?
This would give you some indication if it's the drive or a compatibility problem associated with your computer.
When you unplug the drive does the unknown hid go away?
If not, try removing it with all usb devices unplugged and see if it comes back on reboot. If not then one by one start adding things back in, starting with the external hard drive.
Providing that it works in another system.

does the external drive have a separate power supply? if not it can overload the usb port. try a powered hub if that is so.
