Damage hard disk file recovery

I have a hard drive that is corrupt which I'm trying to recover the files from.  I've downloaded several data recovery tools and scanned the drive but most of them don't actually find the files only many fragments yet Avast will scan the disk and appear to find all the files.  I don't understand that a program that isn't specifically written to recover lost or damaged files can find my files yet specialist programs cannot.
