I have a removable Hard Drive Rack. I want to use it on my Windows SBS 2003 Server as my backup drive. My plan is to rotate three different hard drives into the same tray (say, one per week) and keep the others offsite.
I would like to 'hot swap' the drives -- not turn off the server in the middle of the day. It currently has an Adaptect 2410sa SATA controller (with a pair of mirrored drives as the primary). I hope to attach the backup drive on one of the unused SATA ports.
I obtained another 2410sa, and installed it on my (Vista) test PC to try with one of the racks. The controller does let me remove the drive without crashing windows -- but it is not listed as a 'removable' drive, so I have no way to tell Windows about it. No obvious options in the adaptec BIOS I can see to inform him that it's removable.
The rack ((AMS DS-136SSBK 3.5" SATA Hard Disk Mobile Rack) is from NewEgg (
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817999010).
Can this be done with this hardware combo? Or do I need another (newwer, better, more expensive)controller?
thanks...
