HELP! Windows XP doesnt detect my passport drive...

I bought a western digital passport external hard drive a few months back and didn't face any problems regarding its usage, now when i connect it to my pc with win xp, it just hangs or my display turns off like rebooting without shut down and my power led and busy led turns on continuously, this problem has been encountered only today, even a day back i was using it without any problem...

I changed the cable and tried, but the same problem persists, also i booted ubuntu 7.1 from a live cd and tried but it didnt even detect that such a hard disk is present,

its a 160 gb hard disk with 1 single partition(ntfs) and compression enabled.....

Please help, its very urgent.....
