Question

Cannot Use Driver Western Digital Passport 250 GB 2.5"

Asked by: FaheemAhmadGul

The first time I connected this device to USB Port on my Windows XP Professional Desktop professional, it was recognised and HP application s that probably cam preintalled on the hard disk started working. I started doing a back procedure and it was going fine, but then I cancelled it before full completion. I then clicked on the remove hard safely icon in the system tray, but I got the message that the storage device cannot stopped. After failing to stop it I just pulled it out from the USB port. Since then whenever I connect it to a USB port Windows Add New Hardware process starts and asks me to provide a driver. When I ask it to find it automatically it cannot find any driver. As no driver was provided by HP with the Disk I am unable to provide it a driver. I have checked HP website and they do not seem to have any Windows XP driver at all there for this Drive. I wrote to their technical support more than a week ago and they have not replied as yet. I would appreciate any help. Thanks

Try hook the drive on other system see if the drive is detected and functional.

plug it in, then right click my computer>manage

on the left hand side most of the way down choose disk management and see if the drive shows there and is formatted. if it shows as unknown or unallocated, right click and format it, choose ntfs and check the "quick" box

Exactly the same things happens when I connect it to my other PC (a windows XP tablet PC). It asks me for a driver which I can find no where.
I cannot see it in the list of drives in computer management/disk management either.

what are you plugging it into?

by: FaheemAhmadGulPosted on 2008-02-24 at 08:48:37ID: 20970460

I am plugging it into a USB 2 Port on my desktop. I have tried plugging it into a self powered D Link 7 port hub as well, but I get the same problem - the computer asks me for a driver. I get the same problem when I connect it to a USB port on my laptop. Both my desktop and laptop are recognising and working fine with other kind of USB peripheral devices, such as printer, scanner, and USB flask disks.

i think the controller in the drive may be damaged.

Do you have any windows 98 system around? if so, plug the drive in and install drivers. Most driver provided with device is for windows 98 while newer OS such as XP you wont need it. If not work ... then go WD website, download the diagnostic utility and try see if the drive will be detected by it.

Last resort is to remove the drive from closure and hookup directly to PC (thru adapter) see it detected?

I thank both of you for your help. Although the problem remained unsolved I think you did all that was possible from your end. I have receied support from Western Digital and they say if the Drive is not recognised in different systems, then it should be returned to them for replacement. Thanks for your help again.
