The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

how to stop the autorun popup, when a USB disk is inserted in USB port and how to hide the removable disk drive from windows explorer

Tags: Any, USB disk drives / USB ports
I have a requirement, wherein I have to develop a software to access the USB disk drives (flash memory).

The constraints are where ever this software is to be used, the USB drives should only be accessed using this software.

The code for detecting the USB drive and software to read and display contents of it are ready.

But I am stuck with how to disable the auto run pop (which I feel will be easy) and to hide the Removable disk (drive) from windows explorer (for which I have no idea).

Any thoughts?

Any kind of help is welcome.

Thanks and Regards.

I think all you have to do is to right click the drive in question ( doesn't matter if it's a CD or a thumb drive) choose properties, then click the AutoPlay tab
From here, click the button that says "Select an action to perform:"
Then choose the option:
"Take no action"

That is not a problem, the problem is, how do I make it disappear from the windows explorer, so that user has no other way of accessing it other then my software.

You can make it disappear by unallocating the drive letter that windows has automatically allocated to it, the process is as follows... Right click my computer -> manage -> u'll find the drive listed in right pane below, right click on the drive letter > "change drive letters and paths > Remove > say yes to the warning and close the window, now the drive must have disappeared from explorer....

how are you planning to access it with your app if it was removed from explorer?

you may want to try this.

grant access to yourself after it has been mounted.

To do that (assuming you are not using simple file sharing)

right click the drive, click properties, go to security and assign access to yourself.

if you are not using simple file sharing, open explorer, click tools, then folder options. Go to View tab and scrol down to the bottom and uncheck "Use Simple File Sharing"

NOTE: Restore the security before unmounting in order to avoid inconvenience when you mount the usb to another system.

The whole idea of this software is to deny all users to access the USB drives, when plugged in, they must be accessed by only authorized personnel, this software will be will be installed in al the machines in a proximity, say for example an office, all the machines in the office will have this software installed.

Now there will be only a selected few individuals/logins who will be able to read and write the data from and to the USB drive, (the hierarchy and permissions are already defined, the software is working fine). The problem is that I have to disable the access to the USB drive other then the software.

I will try out the solution given by cool_sathish_333, if it suits and works fine.

But the solution provided by antontolentino may not work in my favor, as this must be done everytime, the drive is plugged in and out, which is not I want.

The whole idea is to control the usage of the USB drives in the system.
