External USB Drive no longer works

Amodata external USB drive has worked for last 2 years.
My kid powered down the computer by pressing the off button and now XP does not recognize the External USB drive

I have:
- tried on a different USB port.
- uninstalled all the usb ports and reinstalled in Device Manager.  It seems to find the new device when I do this.  When restarting is found new hardware "Disk Drive" but yet that doesn't show up in the list of USB devices.  It says Mass Storage Device which I am assuming is the ext. drive.
- device does not appear in Xplorer nor is it recognized in software that came with the drive
- I have looked at My Computer/Manage/Disk Management..and it does not appear there. The C drive appears, a DVD drive will appear when there is a DVD or CD installed in the reader (as D:), and the card readers (for camera cards) appear as drives E: F: G: and H:.  The external drive used to be drive J:

Suggestions?
