Dropped External Drive - Stopped Working

Asked by aaronakin in Removable Backup Media, Hard Drives & Storage, Computer Hard Drives

Tags: , ,

I recently dropped my SimpleTech 160GB SimpleDrive Portable Hard Drive and now it stopped working.  When I plug it into the USB port, my computer recognizes it, it shows up in the device manager, the blue light on top comes on, and then after a couple seconds, it turns back off.  I hear the drive spin up, but it never shows up in My Computer.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can recover the drive, even if it's just long enough to get my data off of it?  I saw a post online in which someone suggested putting the drive in a ziplock bag, removing as much as as possible, and sticking it in the freezer for a day, then quickly plug it back in.  Does this really work?Start Free Trial
