Is Vista installed on the same machine? If not then I would blame the hardware of Vista machine.
When it disappears, can you enter Windows Disk Management and see if your drive is there?
Also, is there additional power cable connected to this drive? Lack of energy could cause the problem.
And finally, see if your Vista power options are not set to turn off drives for energy saving.

a bad USB socket on the vista PC may be the culprit.
replace data cable, and try with another USB port on the Vista PC
