Question

Backups taking forever, any thoughts?

Asked by: GambleSolutions

We currently have a server on our network being used for Backups of about 600 GB of data.  Backup Exec 12.5 is being used.  The server itself is a 1ghz, Pentium 3 with 512mb of RAM.  Hard drives our being used as hot swaps for storage or as the media for backup exec.  The hard drives are 1 TB.  The server is using a dual gigabit NIC.  The full backups start on Friday nights at 9pm.  The backup will continue for about 50 hours and backup about 600 GB.  The data rests on three different servers.  This seems to be extremely long.  Any Ideas as to why it is taking so long for the backups to run??

I don't understand the exact configuration. What exactly are you backing up to? Are those 1 TB drives attached via USB? If yes, P-III's are pretty old and the mainboards used for that type of CPU were normally still using USB 1.1 and not USB 2.0 (actually I'm not aware of any P-III mainboards having built-in support for USB 2.0). USB 1.1 is very slow... If you have inserted a USB 2.0 PCI add-on card, it'll be faster, but also USB 2.0 isn't that fast.

If you aren't using USB for the HD connection, what interface are you using?

The hot swappable hard drive enclosure is a T-7 Storm Series.  It is all done through SATA.  There is a PCI  SATA controller card that connects to the internal enclosure.  The hard drives being swapped are also SATA.  The only other PCI cards in the system are a dual gigabit ethernet card and s SCSI controller card that is not currently being used.

Test your Disk throughput by copying large files from the server itself to your swappable disks (don't copy from the LAN to begin with). If that is slow you probably have an issue with either the HD's, the controller, it's driver, cables, or something installed on the server, like an AV utility, that scans the files while copying. If this is fast enough, do another copy test by copying over the LAN. Run a test with large files, and another with a lot of small files when copying over the LAN.

A 20 GB file was taken and put on an external hard drive.  When the file was moved over from the external hard drive to the internal enclosure it was extremely slow.  About 6.5 hours to move the file to the internal enclosure from the external.  Then the file was moved through the LAN and it only took about ten minutes to go from where it lays on the server to the internal enclosure.  It looks like the USB in the system is 1.1, so that explains why that was slow.

I agree.

by: GambleSolutionsPosted on 2009-10-26 at 04:58:56ID: 25661332

Now that the LAN was ruled out, are there any other suggestions?

by: rindiPosted on 2009-10-26 at 06:34:51ID: 25662051

Above you mentioned it's using USB 1.1, that would be fixable by installing a USB 2 card. But as your not using USB at all, check for driver updates for your SATA controller or try another SATA controller.

The USB was for testing purposes. Backups are not done using USB. Lan copies of large/multiple files to the removable media on the backup server were positive so the issue appears to be in the setup of Backup Exec 12.5.

Then it is possible you don't have the backup-exec agents running on the other servers, or they are incorrectly configured.

Then I'm afraid I have no other tips (except perhaps check the symantec support site, they might have something in their knowledgebase.

Apparently there was an update out there that fixed the issue. It had to be uninstalled/reinstalled. Thanks! Backup of 629Gb only taking 13 hrs now opposed to 3 days.
