SBS 2008 backup software not recognising new USB hard drives

On our SBS 2008 server we are currently running a SBS backup job daily to back data up to external USB hard drives, there are 2 drives and they are cycled daily.
Recently at random occasions the Windows software is picking up the external hard drives in device manager ok however the SBS backup software is still detecting the disks as being offline and hence the backups have been failing.
When the drive is disconnected and reconnected it then is picked up fine by the software.
Any advice on why this is happening or how to resolve it?

ASKER

Any help appreciated.
It's been awhile since i've used this GUI, however if i remember correctly you have to initialise the drive with the backup wizard that comes with SBS 2008. Perhaps one of the options on the left of you first image will do the trick. (Or when at the backup stage)

Are you doing the "safely remove hardware", when you switch them out?
Yes, the users are going through the safe disconnect wizard when disconnecting the hard drive before attaching the new hard drive.
How long have you had these harddrives?
They are 5 months old, worked 100% up until this error.
