I'm writing this from home so I don't have access to the servers to see the actual messages so please bear with me.
A coworker and I are trying to get VMware ESX server 3 running and are having a problem connecting to our EMC SAN. We have setup the LUN on the SAN and assigned it to our ESX server, installed ESX server but VMware doesn't see the LUN. On the console of the ESX server, the LUN shows up as SDB and shows properly as being 2.1TB, but when we use the VMware Infrastructure client to try to add the storage location, it doesn't show up as available. When we look at the storage adapters, the HBA shows up and shows a single LUN with size of 0GB and a LUN ID of 0 (the LUN ID on the SAN is 14). When I run dmesg from the ESX console, there is a message that refers to not being able to connect the SCSI1 device due to multiple paths or a non active path. I'm not sure what this means exactly, but there is only 1 FC connection from the ESX server to the FC switch and a zone setup on the FC switch to dedicate 1 connection to the SAN for the ESX server.
We are both somewhat new to ESX server (I've been using VMware Server and GSX server for a few years now) so we aren't really sure where to go from here.
The SAN is currently being used by about 5 or 6 Windows servers so we're pretty sure there is nothing wrong with the SAN. We have tried re-installing ESX server quite a few times just to make sure we didn't misconfigure something or miss a step.
If somebody could point us in the right direction or give me some ideas of what to look for to narrow down the problems we are having, I would appreciate it. If there are some commands that I should run to get some more information so that I can narrow down where the problem is occurring, that would be helpful as well.
If you need more information to be able to help me, please let me know and I will provide as much as I can. I will be back in the office on Monday and will be able to get to the servers and the SAN to get exact messages and settings and try out any suggestions.
