I already have the hard drive; I want the device driver for it.

by: PUNKYPosted on 2007-05-15 at 09:57:49ID: 19094349

The device driver for hard drive? You wont need it, though. If you have problem with detect the drive in system or during installation, you will need to enable in bios, and press F6 to install sata controller driver for the motherboard. What is nature issue you have there, that you need the driver?

by: jackmcbarnPosted on 2007-05-15 at 10:00:30ID: 19094371

I need the driver for Recovery Console and BartPE.

by: PUNKYPosted on 2007-05-15 at 10:03:41ID: 19094396

OK, you need the sata controller driver for the motherboard. It should be in motherboard cd that comes when you purchased the board. You might need a floppy disk and extract the driver into floppy. When you start repair console, press F6 at begin, and install drive. The sata drive should be now detected and you acn do the next step.

by: jackmcbarnPosted on 2007-05-15 at 10:07:06ID: 19094423

Two things:
1) This is an OEM computer, so I didn't get a motherboard CD
2) I don't have a floppy drive

by: PUNKYPosted on 2007-05-15 at 10:11:08ID: 19094453

So what is system brand and model? If you dont have floppy drive, then it would be difficult and you might have to create slipstream xp cd that contains sata controller drive.

I have a Compaq Presario C306US, and would a USB stick work instead of a floppy?

by: PUNKYPosted on 2007-05-15 at 10:16:24ID: 19094481

The usb stick might work, if you can mount the usb stick when using BartPE or installation disk. Try that.

by: jackmcbarnPosted on 2007-05-15 at 10:17:08ID: 19094487

But I still need the SATA controller driver.

by: f-kingPosted on 2007-05-15 at 10:17:41ID: 19094490

Hi
did you buy a new hard drive  or did it come with the computer?
Im sure you can get a Sata driver from the manufacturer of your Laptop

by: jackmcbarnPosted on 2007-05-15 at 10:18:22ID: 19094494

It came with the computer.

by: jackmcbarnPosted on 2007-05-15 at 13:50:53ID: 19096187

Okay, I managed to inject the driver into BartPE and the recovery console, but now when I load them I get this error:

An unexpected error (768) occurred at
line 5199 in d:\xpsprtm\base\boot\setup\setup.c

Press any key to continue . . .

The error doesn't mess anything up AFAIK, but I would like it to be fixed.

by: jackmcbarnPosted on 2007-05-15 at 13:51:19ID: 19096194

And no, I don't have GoBack.

by: PUNKYPosted on 2007-05-15 at 13:55:48ID: 19096244

That error means the disk you created failed. Re-do it.

by: jackmcbarnPosted on 2007-05-15 at 13:59:16ID: 19096281

I re-did it 3 times.

by: jackmcbarnPosted on 2007-05-15 at 13:59:47ID: 19096285

It only happens when I use that driver.

by: jackmcbarnPosted on 2007-05-15 at 14:08:53ID: 19096355

Also, the recovery console and BartPE still work after that error.

by: PUNKYPosted on 2007-05-15 at 14:25:12ID: 19096472

Did you get driver from here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3253904&lang=en

Worse case, you might order the recovery disk from HP:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00006110&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3253904&dlc=en&lang=en

You might get usb floppy disk (your system is able to boot from usb device), use it to load sata controller driver.

by: jackmcbarnPosted on 2007-05-15 at 14:32:10ID: 19096513

Yes, that's where I got the driver.  I'm not using the USB stick.  I put the drivers right in BartPE (Drivers folder in PE Builder) and Recovery Console (see http://www.jsifaq.com/SF/Tips/Tip.aspx?id=6575).

I fixed this by upgrading the BIOS.  Thanks to PUNKY for telling me I needed the SATA controller driver and not the hard disk driver, and thanks to f-king for telling me that Compaq would have the driver.

NOTE: See http://www.jsifaq.com/SF/Tips/Tip.aspx?id=6575 for how I got the driver in the recovery console.
