You can install Acronis and then mount the image, so you will get a drive letter. VmWare can't use Acronis images as VM's. You can try restoring the images into a VM by starting up acronis when the VM boots.

So I need a VMWare image of let's say windows XP and then on that image I install acronis and then restore the Acronis tib image ?
I am sorry to ask about so much details coz I have little time to do that and it is going to be done remotely...so I dont have "a second chance !"

thanks again for ur help.

You don't have to install windows to run acronis. You can create a Acronis CD then boot your new VM from that CD (you could make an iso image of that CD and mount that instead of using a physical CD).

maybe I didnt make myself clear enough concerning what I need. I need to be able to run the acronis image as a virtual machine without affecting my pc.

then I load the whole image ? I have to install windows 2000 server on the virtual machine ?

by: rindiPosted on 2008-03-04 at 23:45:24ID: 21048473

Then you setup the VM to boot from the Acronis Program CD. When the VM starts you can enter it's BIOS with F2 and set the boot options, so that it starts from CD. Once acronis is loaded, you restore the image to the Virtual Disk you created during setup of the VM. Make sure that disk is large enough.

Then it is probably to load a driver that isn't OK for running as a VM. You said something about using Acronis universal Restore. I haven't used that with Acronis as I don't have that version, so I also can't say how well that option works or whether you need some special setup for it to function. Have you checked with Acronis Support?

Or another option would be to try using the Utility P2V of VmWare itself which makes VM's out of actual PC's. That would leave Acronis out of the Picture as far as I know and will probably work better.

Actually rindi your first comment was incorrect. Acronis .tib files can be converted into vritual machines. VMware began supporting this in Jan '08. This can be done via the VMware Converter.

by: rindiPosted on 2008-03-20 at 08:32:12ID: 21172544

Thanks for the info. At laest I did point out the link to the converter... ;)

Anytime...we are here to help one another. Yes, I noticed your comment on the Converter after I had posted. Keep in mind that you do need to update your Converter version in order for it to recognize/support the .tib format. Also, this is very important, whatever OS version your image contains must be equal to or less than what OS version the Converter host is running. Otherwise you will receive an OS mismatch error of some type. Here's a snippet from my VMware log file:

warning] [importSource,146] Incompatible registry format, guest=5.2 host=5.0

Notice the guest which is the .tib image with XP is 5.2 and the OS the Converter is running under is 5.0 which is 2k.

I am a little confused here guys...please help..
So I CAN import the .tib file into vmware ?
how do I do that ? now the image (tib file) is for a windows 2000 server.with 2 HDD (SCSII)
now what do I do ?
please help.

ps. I run the converter (that converts a real machine into a vmware machine...but didnt work too !!

by: BDruhlPosted on 2008-03-21 at 06:44:07ID: 21179801

First, what OS is the converter running under? It must be equal to or lower than W2k's version and I doubt you are at a lower version.

by: BDruhlPosted on 2008-03-21 at 12:36:37ID: 21182515

With the weekend coming up here's the steps (assuming you have the OS versions in their proper sequence with the .tib OS image version being a prior version to the OS VMware Converter is running under):

(You more than likely already know most of these steps but I'm making them as basic as possible for any first time users of the VMware Converter util who may come along)

1. Launch VMware Converter
2. Click on the "Import Machine" icon in the bottom segment and choose "Next" and "Next" again
3. Now select the "Standalone virtual machine, backup or disk image" option and choose "Next"
4. Browse to the location of the .tib file and select it then choose "Next" again.
(NOTE: If your OS versions are not as I stated you will receive "Unable to determine Guest Operating System" as the Converter attempts to retrieve operating system information from the .tib file. Otherwise Step 5)
5. If no errors occured then you should now have the option to:
    - Import all disks and maintain size
or
    - Select volumes and resize to save or add space

The rest is up to you at this point depending on your preferences.
