Go to disk management and reassign the drive letter for that memory stick to other than F. It should work.

xp goes thru all the installation process and there is a removable drive F in my computer, but all it will say is 'please insert a disk into drive F'

It might be the stick you have is only usb stick card reader, that are one of Avita products. You should have memory stick such as SD, Micro SD, Compact Flash, etc. to place it in usb reader.

Did any drives come with the memory stick? if yes, were they installed properly?
If not, it is possible that you could have a bad memory stick. I would try talking to the memory stick companies tech support. They should be able to point you in the right direction.
