Question

Maxtor One Touch Drive Not Recognized

Asked by: Declan_Basile

I have a Maxtor One Touch Device that isn't recognized by a Windows XP laptop computer but it is recognized by another Windows XP computer.  I tried deleting the "Unknown Device" list in device manager, but when I plugged the unit back into a USB port the "Unknown Device" came back and I still got the error message "Device Not Recognized".  How can I get the computer to recognize the Maxtor device?

Update USB drivers on laptop system. Is there SP3 installed?

Also, when you connect the drive to laptop make sure you connect additional power cable as often laptop does not give enough power to external drive device.

It probably is an issue with power. USB power capabilities can vary from machine model to machine model.

What is the exact drive model number?  Seagate may have a firmware update...

Try a different usb cable...also make sure all windows updates are properly installed and restart your laptop.

Here a list of things to try :
first, you can download the latest drivers for the chipset, and reinstall it to update the USB root hubs

start>run>diskmgmt.msc      check if the usb devices show up in disk management, then run :   start>run>services.msc

In the listing look for removable storage service.
If it is set to Auto, and not started, then start it : click the Start link in the top left...

In c:\windows\inf, look for usbstor.inf    -  If it is not there, you can copy it from another PC..When you find it, right click it and select Install

As far as I'm aware the drive was plugged into the wall.  I thought it was odd that there was no power light lit.  The drive was even making noise and vibrating slightly, making me think that it was on but had no power light.  After trying the drive on another computer and seeing that it worked, I went back to the first computer, the light lit on the drive and now it works on the first computer.  Thanks for the comments.
